The good news is that you don't need a computer science degree to explain it well. You need a good analogy and a few honest words.
Start with what they already know
A seven-year-old already understands learning by example. They know that the more times they practise riding a bike, the better they get. AI learns in a surprisingly similar way: it is shown thousands of examples and slowly gets better at spotting patterns. You can say, "It's a computer that learns from lots of examples, instead of being told exactly what to do."
Use the "guessing game"
Play a quick game. Show your child several pictures of cats and dogs and let them sort the pile. Point out that they didn't memorise a rulebook — they just noticed that cats and dogs look different after seeing enough of them. That noticing-by-example is exactly what an image-recognising AI does, only with millions of pictures.
Be honest about what AI isn't
This is the part many explanations skip. AI is not alive, it does not understand the way people do, and it can be confidently wrong. Telling children this early builds healthy scepticism. A helpful line: "It's very good at guessing patterns, but it doesn't actually know what anything means — so it makes mistakes, and we always check."
Keep it short, keep it curious
You don't need to cover everything in one go. The goal at this age isn't mastery; it's a friendly first impression that the technology is understandable, useful, and made by people. Leave the door open for the next question.
