What every parent should understand about algorithms

"Algorithm" has become one of those words that sounds technical but is actually simple. It just means a set of instructions for making a decision. The algorithm your phone uses to decide which video to show next is doing the same basic thing as a recipe — following a list of rules to reach an outcome. The difference is that the rules are written by engineers optimising for one specific goal: keeping your child watching.

Understanding that goal is the most important thing a parent can know about algorithms.

What the algorithm is actually trying to do

The recommendation systems behind YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and most gaming platforms share a common purpose: maximise engagement. "Engagement" means time spent, clicks, shares, comments — any signal that the user is still active on the platform. The reason is commercial: more time on platform means more advertising revenue.

This sounds cynical, but it is worth understanding clearly rather than emotionally. The algorithm is not malicious. It has no feelings about your child at all. It is simply a system that has been trained to predict what any given user will watch next, and to show them that thing, because watching leads to more watching.

The consequence is that it does not distinguish between content that is good for a child and content that keeps them engaged. Those are different things, and the algorithm only optimises for one of them.

Why this creates specific risks for children

Rabbit holes happen quickly. Recommendation systems learn your child's preferences within minutes. A child who watches one video about a particular topic will be shown more and more specific variations of that topic, narrowing their information environment rapidly. This can be harmless (an obsession with dinosaurs) or concerning (radicalisation through escalating content).

Emotional content performs especially well. Content that provokes strong emotion — anger, fear, excitement, desire — generates more engagement than calm, nuanced content. Algorithms therefore tend to surface more emotionally extreme material over time. For children whose emotional regulation is still developing, this is a meaningful risk.

Volume creates a sense of consensus. When a child sees dozens of videos making the same claim, it is natural to assume that claim must be true. The algorithm creates that volume artificially — it is not evidence of widespread agreement, it is the result of a machine finding more of what the user already clicked on.

What you can actually do

Name what is happening. Children who understand that a system is trying to keep them watching are better equipped to notice when it is working. "That video just played automatically — did you actually want to watch it?" is a question that builds awareness over time.

Interrupt autoplay. Autoplay is the mechanism through which recommendation systems do most of their work. Turning it off — which is possible on most platforms — breaks the loop before it starts. It also puts the child back in control of what they choose, rather than what the algorithm selects.

Watch together occasionally. You cannot audit everything your child consumes, and you should not try to. But watching the same content together sometimes gives you a window into what the algorithm has decided they like — and a natural opportunity to discuss it.

Teach the search habit. A child who actively searches for what they want to watch, rather than passively accepting what is recommended, is using the platform on their own terms. Encourage them to start with intention rather than scroll by default.

Make offline interests genuinely available. Algorithms fill a vacuum. A child who has books, instruments, outdoor space, friends to see, and projects to work on has less need for algorithmic entertainment. The practical answer to screen time is not rules — it is alternatives that are at least as appealing.

The bigger picture

These systems are engineered by some of the most talented people in the world, with enormous resources, to be very good at capturing attention. You are not going to out-engineer them with parental controls. What you can do is raise a child who understands what is happening, questions what they are shown, and makes conscious choices about how they spend their time.

That is a longer project than switching off a device, but it is the one that actually works.
